Ben Nemtin is the Co-Founder of The Buried Life. A group of four guys with a mission to complete a list of “100 things to do before they die”, they’ve helped encouraged others to chase after their own lists while completing theirs. Some of which include playing basketball with Former President Barack Obama, kissing the Stanley Cup, making it onto the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and breaking into the Playboy Mansion.

He’s also a New York Times Bestselling Author and an International Speaker where he has spoken in front of companies Amazon and Microsoft, given TED Talks and a gave a commencement keynote at the University of Utah. Some of his keynote topics include 5 Steps to Make The Impossible Possible, New Leadership : Why You Matter and Mental Wealth.

In this Episode, Ben discusses the importance of surrounding yourself with people that inspire you, how failure is a course correction to success, how to take yourself out of your head, why exposure therapy is the best way to get better and the importance of the ripple effect.

  • Born/raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (9:10)

    • Ruby was a big passion of his growing up. Made the National U-19 Rugby team

  • While studying at the University of Victoria, deals with anxiety training for the World Cup (10:55)

    • Dealt with depression, dropped out of school, lost scholarship and got dropped from the rugby team

  • Got a job, starting talking to friends about his thoughts/feelings, started to feel some self worth and met inspiring people (15:10)

  • Wanting to make a movie, he reaches out to his neighborhood friend Jonnie Penn (17:10)

  • Ben and friends create a list of 100 things they want to do (19:45)

    • Jonnie gets assigned a poem called The Buried Life while in school. Leads to title of their project

    • Land on the question of:  What do you want to do before you die?

  • Plans a two week road trip for the summer of 2006 to shoot the documentary (21:50)

    • They build a website with their 100 list items

    • Start cold calling companies to raise money. Juice company gives them gas money, buy a camera from ebay, bought an RV, Red Bull stocked them up, granola bars from local company 

    • People start reaching out to help with the list / tell them what’s on their list as well 

  • Fear #1 thing that holds us back from chasing our person goals (27:20)

    • Fear of failure / Fear of what other people might

  • Making The List they treated it as if they had $100 Million in the bank and nothing was impossible (31:50)

    • Some of the ones they completed: Play basketball with President Obama, make it onto Oprah Winfrey’s show, write a NY Times Bestseller, kiss the Stanley Cup

  • The first person they helped on tour: Brent who wanted to bring pizza to the homeless shelter he used to live at (35:20)

    • With a broken truck that stopped him from running his landscaping company, the Buried Life boyz bought him a new one 

  • Producer from a Canadian television network reaches out to them about creating a show (#53 on their list) (38:05)

    • Requesting to own all content in the contact, they decline the opportunity 

  • The Buried Life boyz go back to university (42:15)

    • Ben started talking to a therapist and feels much better mentally 

    • Drops out of school. Takes trips down to Los Angeles frequently to build on TBL doc. 

  • Raise money from sponsors to continue working on doc: Levis, PalmPilot (43:10)

    • Buy a 1969 Purple transit bus called Penelope

    • Higher a film crew from Hollywood to follow & shoot them

    • Go on a 2 month road trip in the US 

  • Making trips to Los Angeles, Ben starts figuring out the business of TV (47:20)

    • ABC and MTV was interested. Tony DiSanto, President of MTV gave them full creative control
