Attending college not only provides people with an opportunity to learn & grow but also provides a chance to take risks and try new things. No matter where you attend college- from the big time universities to the small community colleges- there is plenty of “free time” that can be used to your advantage.
Before attending college Justin Escalona consistently put out weekly video content. Doing so gave him the chance to learn as he worked on his craft, improving his skills with every production.
Personally, I don’t know much about his childhood or what else he accomplished before college, but something tells me he was accepted into University of Southern California, one of the top film schools in the country, simply because he put in the work.
When he started at USC, he floated around for two months getting a feel for the college lifestyle and heading to the same frat parties every weekend. After two months of acclimating, Justin realized he needed to change what he was doing, and quickly. He wanted to force himself to create content but not on a weekly basis like he had done before college; on a daily basis instead. He wanted it to be natural & not forced. He was living in Los Angeles- an entirely different place compared to where he grew up- and he wanted to show people what he was experiencing which led him to name the vlog “Daily Docs.”
What started out as just an idea has now transformed into over 235,000+ subscribers and 400+ days of consistent vlog content. The viewers & the fans of the show have become invested in not just the content of the vlog, but more so the people that are part of Justin’s daily life. Fans of the vlog routinely approach him on the street & talk to him as if they’ve known him for years because of his comfortability with sharing his life with the viewers on YouTube. Justin put himself in a position that forced him to create daily content & it has worked out tremendously for him.
Episode Takeaway: Spend ten, twenty, thirty minutes towards doing what you love everyday. When you put in the work & take small steps forward each and everyday, it will have a compounding effect on your skills. And you will improve your craft.
